Julio da Cunha June 30 through August 1, 2010 The French painter Odilon Redon expressed himself in the following words when referring to a body of his works influenced by these particular poems of Charles Baudelaire, "in executing these works it has not been my intention to define but rather to inspire. They should not determine anything. Like serious music they should transport the viewer into the ambiguous world of the undetermined." This thought has also been, somehow, the basis for my paintings presented here. They have not been intended as illustrations. At best they might be considered as coming from what I would term 'symbolic subconscious interpretations'. I have read and re-read Baudelaire's poems, in their original language, at many different stages throughout my life. It wasn't until recently, in viewing this body of my new works that I realized where their inspirational source had come from. I have taken the liberty of quoting random stanzas from several of the poems simply as an aid to the viewer for what could be his or her personal interpretation of these works. - Julio da Cunha Discover our Studio Artists Funding provided by |
