Morgan Kennedy
Zip-Cloth Project
January 29 - May 18, 2008

In Zip-Cloth Project, Kennedy creates sculpture that refers to both traditional building techniques and ritual performance.  By choosing labor-intensive materials—hardware cloth and zip ties—and repetitive, methodical, techniques—such as thatching, sewing, and weaving—Kennedy represents his interest in ritual and its centrality to the human experience.  Kennedy is interested in the physical relationship that exists between the artist, a particular place, and materials.  Kennedy explains, “It is important for a sense of play to exist in how the viewer interprets my work.”  Zip-Cloth Project, he hopes, will ask viewers to deal with form, spatial relations, motion, and the “physicality of engagement.”

Morgan Kennedy (Baltimore, MD) earned a BA in Studio Art at George Mason University and an MFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University.  In 2005, he was awarded the Maryland State Art Council Sculpture Grant and in 2003 he was a resident at the Bemis Artist Residency Program in Omaha, Nebraska.  Since 1998, his work has been exhibited in many galleries along the eastern seaboard. Currently, Kennedy serves as Adjunct Professor of Two and Three - Dimensional Design, Foundations, and Sculpture at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
