Zip-Cloth Project
January 29 - May 18, 2008
In Zip-Cloth Project, Kennedy creates sculpture that refers to both traditional building techniques and ritual performance. By choosing labor-intensive materialshardware cloth and zip tiesand repetitive, methodical, techniquessuch as thatching, sewing, and weavingKennedy represents his interest in ritual and its centrality to the human experience. Kennedy is interested in the physical relationship that exists between the artist, a particular place, and materials. Kennedy explains, “It is important for a sense of play to exist in how the viewer interprets my work.” Zip-Cloth Project, he hopes, will ask viewers to deal with form, spatial relations, motion, and the “physicality of engagement.”
