NEW: 2010 Members' Juried Exhibition
Guest Juror: Roberta Fallon
Dupont I & II Galleries
April 9 - July 25, 2010

Artists deal with the issue of new every time they go into the studio.  If they’ve done their homework, they’ve looked around to see what others are making and studied what has been made in the past.   From all that looking and knowing they create art that is fresh and vibrant and that glances over its shoulder while moving ahead.  New transcends gender, age, and media.  Mature artists, like some in this show, make work that is risk-taking and revealing.  Young artists, too, push boundaries – sometimes referring to the past – to create art that marches onward.  New might incorporate the latest computer software or make use of materials as old as the hills, like oil paint, chalk, and clay.

Because life is not static, art must be dynamic as well. Art's job is to take stock of the times and mirror them back in commentary that is both meta-history and a record of the here and now.  The work in this show reflects our times.  From concern about gender and ethnic stereotyping to frustration with consumer culture and the age-old quest for beauty, spiritual transcendence and peace, the artists in New may be talking in bullet points you’ve heard before, but their voices register new thoughts in the conversation about art, life, and the future.

--Roberta Fallon, March, 2010
