Art on the Move!
Kinetic Sculpture Race & Family Day
Saturday, October 17, 2009
12 noon - 4 pm
The entire community comes together at the DCCA to help celebrate its 30th Birthday during this afternoon celebration. Enjoy an afternoon of art activities and entertainment with the highlight of the day watching or participating in our first ever Kinetic Sculpture Race. It’s actually more of a spectacle and procession than anything and a whole lot of fun! Area businesses, artists, community groups, families, and kids will have fun creating and racing their own people-powered vehicles. Gather a group of friends, pick a theme, dress up, and laugh until your cheeks hurt! Enjoy bicycle-decorating workshops preceding the race and enter to join in on the fun! The racecourse is approximately 1.5 miles around the riverfront. Join in or cheer on your family and friends! More info: www.thedcca.org

What’s this event about?
The kinetic sculpture race will be an entertaining, family-oriented, neighborhood-type of event designed to introduce new audiences to the DCCA and the Riverfront. Kinetic sculpture racers are human powered works of art built, modified, or decorated for the race. (Think bikes, scooters, skateboards, strollers, and rollerblades.)
The concept of kinetic sculpture racing originated in Ferndale, California in 1969 when local sculptor Hobart Brown "improved" the appearance of his son's tricycle by welding on two additional wheels and other embellishments. Seeing this "Pentacycle," Jack Mays challenged him to a race, and others joined in; so twelve machines inaugurated the first race, down Ferndale's Main Street during the city’s annual art festival. Today, kinetic sculpture races exist all over the country and range from small community events like the annual Kensington Kinetic Derby event in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia to citywide amphibious races, such as the Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race in downtown Baltimore, Maryland.
DCCA’s Kinetic Race will be the highlight of an afternoon series of events within and around the DCCA that will celebrate the DCCA’s 30th anniversary. A fun-filled family festival will be held from 12 noon - 3 pm at the DCCA and surrounding grounds with hands-on art projects, entertainment by community groups, refreshments, and tours of exhibitions. The Kinetic Race will be held from 3 - 4 pm. An awards ceremony will mark the end of the race.
The DCCA is proud to welcome the following community partners as participants in the
Kinetic Sculpture Race: Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council and The Delaware Chapter of The Variety Children’s Charity.
