Navigation Puzzle: 2014 Members' Juried Exhibition
Guest Juror -Bridgette Mayer, Director of the Bridgette Mayer Gallery
Navigation Puzzle features one video artist, several artists working with mixed media sculpture, several artists working with photography and mixed media and a majority of the rest of the applicants working within abstraction, several with references to the landscape or figure through pure abstraction and many through pure process and outcome. I enjoyed navigating and taking a visual journey through the multiple entrants to this year’s DCCA members’ group exhibition. The first thing that stood out to me looking at the applicants as a grouping was the thread of abstraction through the majority of the artists. It seemed to be a big puzzle to decode and put back together for this large group show in the DuPont Galleries I & II.
The other thing I noticed was the exuberance of paint/color and process juxtaposed with more minimal color and process, a dichotomy of two distinct styles along with a few artists whose works seemed to be in the middle of these two ideas. Having a history of curating abstract artists, I decided to select the best artist works that stood out within these various styles of abstraction. The result (I hope) is a cacophony and beautiful symphony of many voices, sounds, interests and intentions that for me define a well curated exhibition.
