Young Country is a traveling exhibition and is organized by the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, in Wilmington, Delaware. The show opened in Louisville at the Quonset Hut and will be traveling to the University of the Arts' Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery in Philadelphia from July 6-29, 2011. The exhibition reception in Philadelphia is July 6th and will coincide with a talk by Matthew Higgs, Director and Chief Curator of White Columns, New York.  
 
An exhibition devoted to rural themes in contemporary American art, Young Country specifically examines how artists living in such “far-flung” places as Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Delaware are re-defining ideas of “country” in America. The exhibition features artists who employ rural images and subjects such as horseracing, honkytonks, and homesteading, and addresses how the visual culture of geographic regions shapes perception and identity. Beyond folk or kitsch expression, the works in the exhibition are often critical and conceptual in origin and generate both a humorous and sober dialogue about individual understandings of history and place. 

The show features work by artists from Louisville, KY, Cincinnati, OH, Philadelphia, PA, Houston, TX, Seattle, WA, New York, NY, Lexington, KY and more. The show in Philadelphia will include more artists from across the U.S. and will continue to grow as it travels.

The University of the Arts Exhibition Program promotes a critical dialogue about contemporary issues in the arts through exhibitions, speakers and publications. The Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery is the main gallery of The University of the Arts. The university was created from the merger of three schools; Philadelphia College of Art and Design (established 1876), the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts (established 1870) and a new college the College of Media Communications. The gallery is located in Center City six blocks from City Hall. Past directors of the gallery have included Janet Kardon (past director of the Philadelphia ICA and The American Craft Museum), Elsa Longhauser (now at Santa Monica), and Paula Marincola (from Pew Charitable Trusts).

Artists who have had one person exhibitions in the gallery include Vito Acconci, Siah Armajani, Alice Aycock, Willie Cole, Gregory Crewsden, Richard Fleishner, April Gornik, Alex Grey, Lois Greenfield, John Hejduk, James Hyde, Barbara Kasten, Mel Kendrick, Jon Kessler, Donald Lipski, Henry Moore, Ree Morton, Robert Motherwell, Thomas Nozkowski, Irving Penn, Jack Pierson, Anne and Patrick Poirer, Judith Shea, Pat Steir,  Leonore Tawney, Paul Thek, George Trakas, and  Lebbeus Woods. In addition the gallery has presented notable historic exhibitions of design: Alexei Brodovich, Czech Cubism, Charles Eames, frogdesign, Memphis, and Tapio Wirkkala. The gallery has received two AICA awards for its Yvonne Rainer retrospective and Seductive Subversion" Women Pop Artists 1958-1968.
